CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“We’re running out of time,” Ava announced. Then she held up a hand to stop any comments from her colleagues. And Mitch. “I know that’s not a useful observation. I apologize.” She felt very adult saying those words. In reality, she wanted to pick up her computer and throw it. Preferably at a Secret Service agent. They’d been dragging their heels in providing any information. And if the prior fires were anything to go by, they now had less than fourteen hours before the next one.

At least she and the team hadn’t been sitting on their asses for two days, though. HICC now had a good, and deep, understanding of Aegis Corporation, the security firm hired for the party. Without the list of the employees assigned to the party, they were cross-comparing all of them with their suspect list. They’d identified six people from Aegis who HICC wouldn’t have touched with a ten-foot pole. But so far, they hadn’t found anyone connected to her past.

While they also acknowledged it could be one of the marshals who, unlike the Secret Service, rotated in and out, they’d been ordered by Stella and Hunter to leave that beast alone. She hadn’t heard anything, but she suspected the couple were taking that line of inquiry upon themselves. There was very little Stella and Hunter liked less than when someone came after one of their people. And Ava was damn glad they were on her side.

“She’s right, Chad,” Sabina said, pushing away from her monitor.

“I agree,” Mitch said. “If we’re assuming he’s going to hit that field tonight—the last of the rural sites—then we need to get out and get our surveillance set up.”

Ava glanced over at him. In the last few days, he’d started moving a little easier. She supposed he could thank her hot tub for that. He’d been staying at her place since the Halloween party. It was…something neither spoke of. It just was.

“It’s way the fuck out there,” Mitch added.

“Are we sure that’s where he’s going to hit?” Collin asked.

“No,” Ethan said, walking in and joining the conversation. “But I’ve already got teams set up at the Boathouse and the lodge. And we have folks on standby if anyone crops up on the extra security features we installed around Ava’s.”

“How’s the sweep of the lodge going?” Chad asked.

“They should be wrapping up in about four hours,” Ethan answered. They’d brought in a couple of dog-and-handler teams to sniff for explosives in the main lodge as well as the surrounding property.

Sabina snorted. “It’s a good thing the lodge allows people to bring dogs, or the number of them wandering the grounds today would raise some eyebrows.”

Ethan inclined his head in agreement. “Ryan’s got some folks on standby as well. But it’s Halloween tonight, so I don’t want to rely on his people in case they’re needed elsewhere,” he added.

“How long did it take you to hike out there?” Ava asked Mitch.

“A little over an hour.”

“And you’re an experienced hiker who wasn’t carrying any equipment.
